THE CREATIVE PROCESS - G&S Note Card Collection

STEP 1

The Creative process begins with a pencil sketch of a scene from one of the artist's favorite Gilbert and Sullivan operas. He creates the sketch as he "sees" the scene in his "mind's eye". This early sketch is certainly rough, yet it is started only after researching various aspects of the opera and only after obtaining a thorough understanding of authentic clothing-styles for the period being depicted.

STEP 2

In step two of the process, the sketch is converted into an inked line drawing. Details are added and the drawing takes on its final proportions. These drawings are normally done on 8" x 10" acid free drawing paper with a fine tipped uni-ball pen. Sketch lines are carefully erased as the final line drawing takes shape and becomes ready for coloring.

STEP 3

The coloring process starts to give the drawing life. The previous line drawing is used as a guideline for coloring. Shading is added during this step to give depth and texture to the art. The artist prefers Crayola colored pencil as his medium for this type of work. It allows for necessary detail and yet provides unlimited opportunity for shading and blending where desired. In the final step of the creative process the artist adds a background to the work.

STEP 4

The background is intentionally kept "soft" to give the drawing depth and contrast. Each background tries to remain true to the setting and period being represented. Finally the ink lines are re-traced to provide emphasis and detail to various elements of the drawing. The entire work will now be digitally scanned and resized according to it's intended use.
